A Love Letter to My Dear Old Dog

Dear Girl,

How the time has flown by. From just 10 weeks old you have been a constant ball of energy in both of our lives, and at the ripe old age of 9 you still have the same familiar bursts of energy with just a little less pep in your step. Seeing this makes me realize how time may not be on our side.

You have been there for me in the good times and the bad, and I can’t thank you enough for that. Through thick and thin, we’ve been as thick as thieves. You have been there for me throughout it all, and when I needed you the most you have always had my back. You have been more solid, present and consistent in my life than any other soul I have encountered in 34 years, and you have done it with the same enthusiasm every single day. I can never repay you for the unconditional love that you have shown me. You have taught me about life more than you can understand. My girl, thank you for your unwavering loyalty and trust, and for giving me so much more than money could ever buy. You have taught me what empathy truly is at its core, and you have never expected anything from me in return, except for the occasional toss of a ball.

You are a true life saver, Olive.

I have enjoyed every moment of our time together, our many travels, and seeing the world with you by my side, my dear girl. You have been the best friend and companion that I could have ever asked for, and for that, I am eternally grateful. You came into my life when I needed you the most, and you have been by my side ever since. Your love is irreplaceable.

I am quite positive that I will never find another friend like you.

Dear sweet girl, I hope and pray that I can count on 9 more years together, but the reality is, that’s probably just not in the cards for us, and I will never selfishly watch you suffer. Instead, I will cherish the time that we do have left, and enjoy reminiscing over all of the adventures that we have shared in the past.

I promise to stick with you no matter how hard life gets with age, and I vow to always do right by you. I can only hope to be able to give back to you in the ways that you have devoted your life to me.

“Dogs have given us their absolute all. We are the center of their universe. We are the focus of their love and faith and trust. They serve us in return for scraps. It is without a doubt the best deal man has ever made.” — Roger A. Caras
